Don’t get me wrong: I’m a patriot through and through. I consider myself independent, but am decidedly more Republican/conservative than Democrat/liberal. 4 years later, after realizing our American people have been dying for a war with no clear “finish line” or objective, a war initiated under false pretenses, my feelings have greatly changed. I think my current feelings can be best expressed through a quote from the late Malcolm X:

“You’ve been hoodwinked. You’ve been had.
You’ve been took. You’ve been led astray, run amuck.
You’ve been BAMBOOZLED.”

Barack Obama Quitting Smoking http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=6 http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=6#comments Thu, 22 Mar 2007 15:38:36 +0000 Phrozen Smoke Uncategorized Politics and Current Events http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=6 I’m WAS a big fan of Barack Obama and was moved by his explosive, emotional speech given at the 2004 Democtratic National Convention.  It was very moving, uncensored, and RAW.  Mr. Obama stressed his uniqueness and individuality.  Mr. Obama’s overall message in that speech: “America has a place for EVERYBODY.”   Well, apparently not smokers.

Mr. Obama has been selling out little by little in his quest for the White House.  He’s toned down his emotional rhetoric and now avoids “controversial” topics such as same-sex marriage.   Mr. Obama is currently trying to quit smoking to make himself more “mainstream” and “acceptable” to American society.  His mentality has changed from “everybody can fit in America” to “everybody must learn to fit in.”  Sad.

Many Americans seem bothered by the prospect of a smoker becoming president but seem to have NO problem with having a professed alcoholic and a bumbling drunk (George W.) constantly grinning and laughing at inappropriate times sitting in the White House  with his finger “on the button.”  I voted for George W. back in 2000 believing he was a RECOVERING alcholic.  I did not realize at the time I was voting for a 8-year “Happy hour,” unethical behavior, 20+ scandals, and a protracted war lacking direction fueled by Mr. Bush’s “liquid courage.”  The President is the head of the  EXECUTIVE branch of the federal government: The primary purpose of the Executive branch is to ENFORCE law, not break it.
I would really prefer to take my chances with the smoker, if he ever decides to be “himself” again.

Bill O’Reilly on Gay Adoption http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=5 http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=5#comments Wed, 21 Mar 2007 19:45:05 +0000 Phrozen Smoke Gay/Lesbian Rights http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=5 I want to first say that I am actually a HUGE fan of Bill O’Reilly’s controversial commentaries and the No Spin Zone.

However, there are times when I catch Mr. O’Reilly making statements that contradict his own logic.

Bill O’Reilly has said on several occassions that children are better off being raised in straight, traditional homes. According to O’Reilly, traditional heterosexual homes provide “optimal” conditions for raising kids and kids who are products of heteorsexual couples are more likely to be “well adjusted” than kids raised by same-sex couples. However, O’Reilly does acknowledge that he would prefer a child with no family be adopted by a same-sex couple rather than not be adopted at all. He makes clear that gay adoption should be a “last-resort.”

Mr. O’Reilly’s logic does not make sense for the following reasons:

Let’s take a look at the types of children likely to have trouble getting adopted into a permanent home; The type of kids likely to be given to gay adoptive couples as a “last resort”:

Mentally retarded, disabled children
Children with Down Syndrome or Autism
Minority children
Children born drug-addicted
Children with mental or emotional problems
Older children (teens, etc.)
Children with HIV, cancer, or other long term illnesses.
Children that need to be adopted in a group (i.e., a set of triplets or twins, a group of close syblings)

Adoption statistics show that the most sought after kids for adoptions are white babies with no known health, emotional, or mental problems. In fact, white couples will go as far away as Russia, Albania, and the Czech Republic to find a “perfect” white baby as opposed to adopting one of the many adorable minority babies available here in the States. As a “last resort,” some white couples will look for an Asian baby but rarely ever a Latino or Black baby.

However, the kids likely to have trouble getting adopted all require some level of special attention not required by a single physically/emotionally/mentally fit white baby:

Mentally retarded, disabled children (Additional patience, special schools, medical needs)
Children with Down Syndrome or Autism (Additional patience, special schools, medical needs)
Minority children (Racial awareness and sensitivity)
Children born drug-addicted (Additional patience, special schools, medical needs)
Children with mental or emotional problems (Additional patience, special schools, medical needs, therapy)
Older children (teens, etc.) - (Often “troubled” from being in the system this long)
Children with HIV, cancer, or other long term illnesses. (Patience, extra “nursing”, medical care)

What does NOT make sense is Mr. O’Reilly asserting that:

1. Gay parents are not “as good” and “not as ideal” as straight parents

2. Kids that require the MOST attention and the BEST care possible (and likely to be among the LAST adopted) should be given to (homosexual) parents that are not “as good” as other (straight) options available

Logically speaking, if a kid requires MORE attention and care than most, wouldn’t it make sense to place that kid with the “most fit” parents possible (In O’Reilly’s estimate, straight parents)?

In my opinion, what Mr. O’Reilly is REALLY saying is that

1. He doesn’t like the idea of gay adoption

2. However, gay adoptive parents should be allowed to take the left-overs, the kids none of the straight people wanted

3. Straight couples should get “first pickings” of available kids and have first access to the “cream of the crop

4. Gay adoptive parents are useful only as a dumping ground for kids deemed undesirable by straight couples; Gay parents can be USED as a convenient way to “dispose of” “undesirable” kids stuck in the system and eliminate taxpayer burden

5. The “last resort” kids are inherently hopeless in Mr. O’Reilly’s view; So, he cares not whether these kids are placed in “fit” or “unfit” homes. To him, these kids are “stow-aways” who can be placed anywhere.
Mr. O’Reilly’s views remind me of how this society has a “use as necessary” view of gays and lesbians. We are treated like crap until we are “needed” for something. Straight women quickly look with disdain at lesbians only to flock to their nearest gay male hairdresser that weekend. The military hates gays until we are at war: Note the military’s “stop loss” policy and lower rate of gay/lesbian dismissals since the wars started. (Gay/lesbians were despised by the military until they experienced a manpower shortage and realized that the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” dismissals weren’t working to their advantage right now.)
What does “last resort” mean: We’ll first try straight couples, single mothers, single fathers, drug addicts, pedophiles, serial killers…. If that doesn’t work, then we’ll dump the kid off on some gay couple. Mr. O’Reilly’s logic is typical of heterosexuals despising gays and lesbians but using them when it’s convenient to do so.
If Mr. O’Reilly REALLY cared about the welfare of the kids stuck “in the system,” he would be requesting the United States to outlaw all adoptions abroad until we’ve found homes for our kids living in the United States. No child should be categorized as a “last resort” or “undesirable”: If a straight, white couple is unwilling to adopt an available minority children, maybe even with disabilities, here in the States, they should NOT be permitted to go “import” what they feel is a “perfect” white baby from overseas.

People who WANT a child bad enough will adopt any available child: Mr. O’Reilly knows this fact and exploits the desire of gay/lesbian couples to raise families by asserting that they should be used as a dumping grounds for otherwise “unwanted” children.

Why Hate Crimes = Terrorism http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=4 http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=4#comments Wed, 21 Mar 2007 17:47:25 +0000 Phrozen Smoke Politics and Current Events http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=4 The American Heritage Dictionary defines terrorism as “The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.”

“Hate crimes (also known as bias crimes) are violent crimes, hate speech or vandalism, motivated by feelings of enmity against an identifiable social group. Crimes motivated by hatred toward particular groups not only harm individual victims but send a powerful message of intolerance and discrimination to all members of the group to which the victim belongs. Hate crimes can and do intimidate and disrupt entire communities.

Though the definition of Hate Crime and Terrorism can vary from state to state, country to country, and person to person, most definitions supplied mirror the definitions listed above.

My assertion that Hate Crimes and Terrorism are one in the same is based on the above definitions:

a. Both definitions require actions or speech designed to “intimidate societies” (or social groups); A society being nothing more than social group. We won’t split hairs about this one.

b. Acts of Terrorism are done to make political or social statements. Examples: September 11th, the Oklahoma City bombing, abortion clinic bombings, etc. These acts are designed to coerse or manipulate existing policy or customs: A “scare” tactic.

c. Hate Crimes, too, are done to make a statement, prove a point, or discourage certain types of behavior.
Examples:

    1. The Klu Klux Klan hanging African Americans shortly after slavery ended to discourage them from exercising their newly gained voting rights.
    2. Male rapists who target “strong” women or feminists in an effort to “teach them a lesson” and encourage them to “stay in their place.”
    3. A group of straight male jocks going out “fag bashing” in an effort to “make an example” of 2 men they perceive as gay or to let the neighborhood know that homosexuals aren’t welcome.
    4. Nazi-era swastikas painted on walls are a visual warning to Jews to “stay away” or “face consequences.”
    5. Shouts of “faggot” to homosexuals are designed to marginalize and ridicule; Shouts of “faggot” to straight men are designed to encourage the man to be “more macho” or discourage him from voicing displeasure or discomfort or risk being confused for a homosexual.
Hate crimes are intended to control the physical mobility, social mobility, and/or public behavior of an entire social group, not just the representative victim in the attack, by sending “warnings” and making “examples” of people. Hate crimes are intimidating tactics used to coerce or influence a whole social group or society.

For this reason, Hate Crimes are Acts of Terrorism and should be treated as such under the laws that govern these United States, making the perpetrators eligible for lengthy jail sentences and capital punishment. Attack a black man because of his race = life in prison, no parole; Murder a gay man simply because he’s gay = “Old Sparky”; Spray paint a swastika on a private home or burn a cross on a lawn = “25 years to life”; “Hate” or “Sexism” based rapes = Execution

People have every right not to LIKE a particular group of people, but no one has a right to use tactics of fear to limit that group’s access to certain jobs, housing/neighborhoods, or political and economic rights and services or to inflict injury or cause death.
Second, the laws in the United States should allow the use of lethal force by any member of the traditionally “targeted” groups (racial minorities, non-Christians, women, gays/lesbians, disabled individuals) in the event they feel they are about to be or have been the victim of a Hate Crime: An attempted “bashing”, a racial slur, or homophobic statement could be legally “answered” by the vicitim with a self-defensive hail of .38 calibur gun fire. “Protesting” against gay marriage is “Free speech.” Yelling homophobic epithets gays and lesbians or attacking them physically is Terrorism.

First Blog http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=3 http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=3#comments Mon, 19 Mar 2007 20:42:01 +0000 Phrozen Smoke Love/Romance http://phrozensmoke.com/WP/?p=3 I’ve never tried this blogging stuff before, but it seems like a good place for idol thoughts, brain dumps, rants, and raves. Occassionally, I might even share words of wisdom and lessons learned:

Lesson 1. Often times, what you are looking for in life is right in front of your face. Me and my new wife found this out the hard way. 6 years of darting in and out of each other’s lives: Each time, God put us right back in each others lives.

As the Mississippi Mass Choir sang in The Color Purple, “maybe God is trying to tell you something.”

I finally popped the question this past December:
